ACC Football 2010 Betting Previews and Odds: Atlantic Division

By: CTS Guest Capper     Date: Jul 16, 2010
Print Article

Its finally here college football preview time. Usually we are all about giving Free Sports Picks, previewing a big MLB series, or just giving must know sports handicapping information. But the next six weeks we will put most of that on hold as we preview college football and give our betting picks for each conference. The first preview of the football season will be in the ACC. With a pretty large conference we are going to break the ACC down into two previews. Today we look at the Atlantic division of the ACC. This conference in recent years has lost some of its luster but this year a new television contract in tow should help get the word out on how much better they will be.

Betting Previews and Odds to win ACC's Atlantic Division

Florida State Seminoles (+125): 2009 record 7-6
-Hate to kick dirt in the face of Bobby Bowden but his hall of fame style was not getting it done as the inmates were running the asylum. Those days are behind the Seminoles as they add a much younger, strict coach in Jimbo Fisher. If you look the last few years his offense has not been the problem as they have really put up some good numbers. Talent is not a problem on this team and if Fisher's leadership can unite this group watch out. The passing game is the strong point of this team with Ponder back and healthy he will dissect most defenses. The defense has been a unit that needed a change, well they have Mark Stoops in and his zone blitzing scheme will allow these great athletes to show off. This team will be much improved and even a tough out of conference schedule this team has a chance to get back to double digit wins. This team will most likely be favored in all but three games this year and none of those should be against Atlantic division teams. Hard to imagine they don't end up winning the ACC Atlantic Division but just above even money is hard to swallow on a team that is near .500 the last two seasons.

Boston College Eagles (+300): 2009 Record 8-5
-Two ACC Championship game appearances in the last three years and a decent rebuilding season last year have this team poised for big things in 2010. The defense will be the strength of this Eagles team and with the return of Herzlich this side of the ball could be scary. Offense was the problem in most of the losses last year and a lack of depth and speed will be a problem early on. Coach Spaziani will have his team ready every game and preperation or discipline will never be the problem. Pretty good betting value on a team that has a favorable conference schedule as only really tough road game is at Florida State.

Clemson Tigers (+300): 2009 Record 9-5
-Last years Atlantic division champions have some big shoes to fill as Spiller heads to NFL. The good news is now 2nd year Coach Swinney should have Kyle Parker back and better than last year. Talent should not be a problem as the recruiting classes have been pretty highly rated the past few years. Defense was much better than expected last year and with most of the up front players back this unit should keep them in most games. The one problem with this team is the schedule as they play road games at FSU, BC, and UNC. Those three will be tough wins plus they will most likely lost at home to Miami, FL. Have to pass on this team to win Atlantic as their odds should be more like +600 with that schedule.

North Carolina Wolfpack: (+800): 2009 Record 5-7
-Disappointing had to be the word last year as the Wolfpack struggled to only 2 wins in the ACC in 2009. Good news is they have exciting QB Wilson and RB Washington to give them big plays but after that we have a ton of questions. Coach O'Brien might wish he never left BC. Looking at the schedule you would have to wonder if this team wins only one game in first month of the season. This team will play better football than last year but will be hard pressed to win more than half of their conference games. Odds might as well be 100-1 to win the Atlantic as talent is not on their side.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons (+850): 2009 Record 5-7
-Coach Grobe might be the best defensive coach in the conference and even with less heralded recruits he continually puts out very solid teams. Many think that losing 4 year start QB Skinner will be a problem but they are wrong. Skinner's key turnovers last year cost them at least three games and he did not win them one game. Defense will keep this team in nearly every game, in fact Grobe has been turning out NFL defensive studs for the past 3 years. Might have the best schedule of the teams picked on the bottom of conference. Only games at FSU and VT will be games that they most likely will be way outmatched. Great coaching and maybe the best defense in the Atlantic gives this team unbelievable value at +850.

Maryland Terrapins: (+1100): 2009 Record 2-10
-How do you make a 2 win team worse?? Well you lose 3 offensive lineman and nearly all your secondary players. Even worse looks like the athletic department are ready to pull the plug on coach Friedgen. This team was one of the worst defenses last year and they have not got any better. On offense they really look like they have talent at the skilled positions but with a suspect offensive line it will be tough to show it. This team might as well be a million to one as they have absolutely no chance to win the Atlantic Division.

The Atlantic Divsion in the ACC is without a doubt the weaker of the two divisions with only one elite athletic team in FSU. But betting value says stay away from a team with so many issues the last few seasons. If you are going to take a swing at a longshot Wake Forest is the most likely candidate.

Have a great Football Season by putting money in your pockets.
