As we prepare for another College Football season we try and analyze our sport betting notebooks and make sure we are locked and loaded. Getting off to a good start will ensure that we will have our third season in a row where our picks have shown huge profits. Today we look to one of the best conferences to bet against the spread, the BIG EAST Conference. Some of the college football royalty snub their nose at the Big East but this conference has provided us with huge profits and a 65% win record within the conference. Lets take a look at the team odds, previews, and picks for winning the Big East conference in 2010.
Betting Previews and Odds 2010 Big East Conference
West Virginia Mountaineers (+300): 2009 Record 9-4
-A much easier out of conference schedule this year has fans thinking if the cards fall right they could finish with only a loss to LSU. With 18 total starters back of a team that had a chance to beat both Pittsburgh and Cincinnati the sky's the limit. Losing last years starting QB seems to be the only real issue that they must answer. Some of the offensive coaches actually think this years starter Geno Smith will be even better and allow them to have bigger down the field passing plays. Defensively this team has much better depth than last year and with the athletic front seven this side of the ball will be great. Only issue at betting this team to win the conference is the other two favorites Pitt and UCONN are road games for WVU. No way can lay the money knowing that they would have to win both on road.
Pittsburgh Panthers (+300): 2009 Record 10-3
-Coach Wanstedt has led this team back to at least relevance but with the late season collapses with this great talent have left fans wanting even more in 2010. Offensively they might have a possible Heisman Trophy Candidate at Running Back with Sophmore Dion Lewis. Only issue on offense might be the passing game as last year it was totally missing in games. Talent is very good on defense as well but last year they were very inconsistent including allowing Cincinnati up and down the field to cost them the Big East crown. With early season games against Utah and Miami and road games against Cincinnati and UCONN its hard to imagine this team wins more than 9 regular season games. No value in betting this co-favorite as Coaching and the schedule is too tough.
UCONN Huskies (+300): 2009 Record 8-5
-Maybe the toughest season ever for Coach Estel as they still battled and came out with some huge wins and this year the stars might be aligned. A balanced attack on offense has a possible superstar Jordan Todman. This run attack should give them great ball control and will help a defense that is solid but lacking in depth. Early season the secondary will be tested as last year this was the weak link for sure. Lucky for UCONN they play all the top teams in the conference at home. If this team can just win home games against Pitt, WVU, and Cincy they should win the conference. Love the schedule but just can't see the secondary holding up against the big boys, will pass on the Huskies to win the Big East in 2010.
Cincinnati Bearcats (+500): 2009 Record 12-1
-New Coach Butch Jones tries to win the third straight Big East title in Cincinnati. Good news is this team is loaded with talent and the system's from the two coaches is very similar. Bad news is they lose best all around player in the conference last two seasons WR Marty Gillyard. They also lose Tony Pike at QB but with him missing 4 games last year we have seen how good new QB Collaros. Think the offense might be not as explosive but should be a little more running that will control the clock and maybe help the defense. Last year the defense was athletic but lacked the ability to stop the run. This defense will improve and with the offense scoring slower this defense will reap the benefits. Like the value at +500 with only two tough road games against WVU and UCONN. Worth a wager as this one might come down to Pitt at Cincy last game of the regular season.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights (+500): 2009 Record 9-4
-A great story the last few years as this teams is relevant for the first time in forever. This year the team will be very similar to last year, great on defense, below average on offense. The defense has nearly every starter back and many think they might be the best in the conference and possibly one of best in College football. Offense last year was up and down and might be worse this year with three new offensive lineman. Also at QB they have Savage back at QB and not sure that he is good enough to win games at the level they need to play. Schedule makers have this team really up against it as they play road games against Cincy, WVU, Pitt, and South Florida. Might as well be +1000 as they will need a ton of help just to win 8 games this year.
South Florida Bulls (+500): 2009 Record 8-5
-Skip Holtz would not just leave for any job and many in Florida are going to be scared as the Holtz name is very powerful. Even more reason for the Bulls fan to be excited is QB BJ Daniels. Daniels was thrown in last year and he was unbelievable getting done on athleticism alone. Now this year he is better shape and actually will be well coached, watch out. This defense lost all but 4 starters but they did play a ton of players so don't expect a huge drop off. Also remember this team has always been loaded with athletes and now a strict coach might just mean big things in 2010. Out of conference schedule is brutal but in conference only road games against Cincy and WVU means great value. Worth a second look but just going to lay off.
Louisville Cardinals (+900): 2009 Record 4-8
-New coach, new QB same result in 2010. Definite a team that should be very good against the spread as new Coach Stong is a defensive mastermind. But a lack of recruiting atheltic and or speed at the skilled positions will keep this from even .500 this year. No way would lay a dime to win the Big East in 2010.
Syracuse Orangmen (+1000): 2009 Record 4-8
-Make this short and sweet this team has too many starters back off an average 2009 team. This team just does not have the horse to get it done on offense. Defensively they are better than average but they just aren't the type of defense that can shut out or win a game on their own. Might as well be a million to one this team is not winning the Big East this year or anytime in the near future.
At least 5 team can win the conference this year so no one can feel too confident that any one team will dominate. In fact could see this coming down to the last week between Cincy, Pitt, WVU, and UCONN. Twisting my arm will take Cincinnati Bearcats at +500 to win the BIG EAST in 2010.
