This is part II of Craig’s 2009 NFL mock draft preview and prediction. We will take a look at the middle of the 1st round and breakdown each teams needs and also predict who they will pick. Make sure you check back next week as Craig will pick rest of the 1st round picks 21-32.
11. Buffalo Bills
• Needs: Bills need to address three issues this draft TE, OL, and DE. Have seen about 6 different players being projected here and a lot will have to do with who is left on the board. They might take the best DE or OL available.
• Pick: Brandon Pettigrew TE from Oklahoma State will most likely be there pick if DE Brian Orakpo is already off the board. All reports are they love the DE and might even be willing to trade up to get him.
12. Denver Broncos
• Needs: Defense Line help is so bad on this team that not sure any one player could help them. If they can’t get some help in free agency they might try and trade down to get multiple defensive players that can all step in and play.
• Pick: With the best DT gone they will have no choice but to take the best CB left and CB Vontae Davis out of Illinois looks to be best available at this point.
13. Washington Redskins
• Needs: Playmakers on defense are much needed for this team. Not really one position jumps out at you so would assume this team takes the best defensive player available.
• Pick: Malcolm Jenkins CB from Ohio State is by the best playmaker left on the board and might even be moved to safety with his size. Shut down corner that also is a great tackler in run support hard to find in the NFL.
14. New Orleans Saints
• Needs: Best offense in league last year needs a ton of help on defense though and not sure one draft pick here can turn this defense around. Shut down corner would help them or a DT that can stop the run.
• Pick: Saints are in love with Malcolm Jenkins might trade up to get him. If not they take Everett Brown who is a hybrid DE/OLB from Florida State. His flexibility could really help a team that does not have many playmakers on defense.
15. Houston Texans
• Needs: Much improved young team that does not need much to get them over the hump. Most likely will take a OLB/DE that can pass rush on 3rd downs and also can stop the run on early downs.
• Pick: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU a potent left end who can both get to the quarterback and stop the run. Jackson will allow Mario Williams to play right end exclusively, where he’ll continue to wreak havoc upon opposing signal callers
16. San Diego Chargers
• Needs: Offensive tackle help is much needed for this team. Also could use some depth at both DE and or LB. This team has been pretty good in the draft would not be surprised if they trade down to gather more late round picks.
• Pick: Brian Cushing OLB from USC is a very flexible outside pass rusher and very good tackler. His athletic ability is unbelievable and is a luxury pick at this spot. Think would love one of the top 3 OL to still be here but don’t think they will be here.
17. New York Jets
• Needs: QB they are desperate to get a signal caller and if both of the two QB’s are off the board it could be disaster time. Could use other WR playmakers also but without a QB to get the ball to them not sure it matters.
• Pick: Jeremy Maclin WR from Missouri would be ideal for them but with him long gone they will take WR/RB Percy Harvin from Florida. Might be a stretch but he is the next best play maker on offense in this draft.
18. Chicago Bears
• Needs: Finally the Bears have a franchise QB and would make sense to get a top flight WR here but the Bears also need DE pass rusher. Either way they can't go wrong here.
• Pick: Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers would be a great addition to a very dismal offense last year. Britt is a dynamic wideout, and at 6-3, 210, he's exactly what the Bears need to remedy their red-zone issues.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
• Needs: Not really any glaring needs and might be looking for a luxury pick at this spot. With both RB’s still on the board would be surprised if they don’t take one of them
• Pick: Knowshon Moreno RB at Georgia is too good to pass up here. With Cadillac injuries the last two years Moreno would give a huge boost to the run game. If Moreno isn’t here, the Buccaneers will look at Jeremy Maclin, Tyson Jackson, Peria Jerry and Josh Freeman as options, though it’s realistic that all four might be off the board.
20. Detroit Lions
• Needs: With the Lions already addressing there QB needs look for them to address there OL needs. With the two can't miss prospects off the board at OT they have to choose between several 2nd tier OT.
• Pick: William Beatty, OT, Connecticut a slight stretch here but they have to get a OT no matter what. The Lions surrendered 52 sacks in 2008. Drafting a quarterback first overall and then not providing him with a top-notch left tackle would be foolish.
Craig’s mock draft picks #11-#20 will be very volatile with changes all the way up to the draft. Many teams are still exploring trades and free agency to fill in their rosters or upgrade in certain need areas. Don't forget to check back in a few days as Craig finishes up his 2009 mock draft!!
