Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando Magic-Sunday June 14, 2009 8 PM EST
Drama and questions abound in this series but game six had some of the most if, what if scenarios thus far. Despite correctly picking Los Angeles to cover, I know with absolute certainty that this game was Orlando's to lose, and sure enough the Magic folded like a lawn chair. There was no way Orlando should have lost, but as a bettor it's always better to be lucky than good. Of course, the Orlando backers have plenty to be upset with and I'll cash my ticket in silence, knowing full well I stole one.
Fortunately, for LA backers Jameer Nelson came back from his shoulder injury just in time to throw a monkey wrench into the chemistry Orlando had coming into the finals, especially on the offensive side. He's struggling with his shot, turning the ball over and is a liability. Probably the biggest impact is that Nelson is taking playing time from Rafer Alston, one of the more dependable players the Magic have.
It appears that Van Gundy is responsible for the latest debacle, as he makes the decisions of who plays and when. His decision to stick with Nelson has likely handed the Lakers another championship. Anybody think the Magic can win three straight? In all fairness, this would have been a non issue if Dwight Howard could make a free throw and ice the game. Superman? I think I'll refrain from calling him by that name for awhile.
Where was the defense when Derek Fischer nailed the three to tie it with seconds remaining? Oh yeah, that was Jameer Nelson defending and flailing away hopelessly. Of course, Kobe poured in his normal 30 and the Lakers had something to do with this win as well, so give them credit.
I'm not an LA or Phil Jackson fan, but I'm certainly not a Van Gundy fan either. Perhaps I'm over analyzing this and Orlando has gone as far as their talent could take them. At this point it just doesn't matter anymore. I've seen enough to know that it will take divine intervention for the Magic to win three in a row. After game four however, it looks like the man upstairs is a Los Angeles fan.
