MARK's Free Sports Pick 7/8/9

Florida Marlins (43-32) at San Francisco Giants (46-37) Wednesday July 8, 2009 3:45 PM EST

Starters: Christopher Volstad (R)-(5-8, 4.85) vs. Ryan Sadowski (R)-(2-0, 0.00)

The funny thing about baseball is that a team can have a better record than a division leader and still not make the playoffs. We are seeing that in this game, as Florida is a breath away from leading the east and the Giants are in contention for the wild card even though their record is much better than the Marlins. Hardly seems fair but like I said, this is baseball.

The hot again, cold again Marlins are poised to take over first from Philly should they stumble, but the Phillies haven't been consistently good over the last month aside from sweeping the Mets and that's nothing to brag about. The fact is that Florida is in something of a stagnant mode. The Fish are not reeling off any big win streaks and that could be their downfall. Volstad has one quality outing in his last four starts and Florida has won just one of his last seven starts. It seems the run support he received earlier in the year is long gone.

Sadowski has been brilliant in his two starts, a great way to start a career. I'm sure San Francisco didn't envision him putting up nothing but goose eggs when they called on him and he's been more than a pleasant surprise. The Giants are getting him ten runs per game so far and how he does in a close game is a question that lingers in the back of my mind.

Both teams need this game for obvious reasons and obviously Sadowski will be scored on at some point and SF is not going to throw a 10 spot on the board every time he takes the hill. Having said that, let's hope Sadowski and the San Francisco offense continue on this streak today.

Mark's Free Sports Pick: Giants -120
