Monday Night Football Free Pick: Jets @ Ravens

By: CTS Guest Capper     Date: Aug 24, 2009
Print Article

Today we have a special Guest Handicapper Mitch from Sports Chat Place! Mitch is Craig's co-host in his weekly Handicapping Radio Show PICKS & PARLAYS which airs on Tuesday's at 7 PM EST. Today Mitch will look at the NFL Monday Night Preseason match up between New York Jets @ Baltimore Ravens (-3)!

I really like what the New York Jets did this past offseason and in the NFL draft. I thought the trading up and picking of Mark Sanchez was the right move and one which may pay huge dividends down the road.

Unfortunately for the Jets, down the road doesn't refer to a road trip to Baltimore where basically this team without direction under center plays against one of the nastiest defenses in the league year in and year out. The Ravens didn't give up a point in their first preseason game and it wasn't just a coincidence.

While Kellen Clemmons and Mark Sanchez battle it out for the QB spot for the Jets, their is no controversy when it comes to leadership roles on the Jets. While the Ravens lost LB Bart Scott to the Jets in free agency, these are things the Ravens have been dealing with for years and they should have no problem as the core still remains.

While I'm not a big Joe Flacco fan at the QB spot for the Ravens and I am in the minority in thinking he is part of the answer, I really like the stable of running backs the Ravens have put together and believe they are five deep or better for this game. This is probably where the difference will be made.

The Ravens just aren't going to be about throwing the ball around, they are going to be about playing stout defense and giving their offense good field position so they can put points on the board.

I am looking for Shonn Greene to really step up for the Jets at running back. While Thomas Jones is the incumbent, I'm not sold it's his job all the way. Leon Washington saw plenty of action last year and it will more than likely be running back by committee once again this year.

This game is going to be emotional as Ravens ex-defensive coordinator Rex Ryan returns as the new head coach for the Jets and he'll be looking to make an impression. Unfortunately for Ryan, I believe his old defense will be the ones who make the statement.
