We have already looked at two of the three AFC East contenders and today we look at the team that has owned the East for what seems like the last 10 years, the New England Patriots. If the New England Patriots are going to win the AFC again this year it will be on the offensive side of the ball again this year. Since Bill Belichik has been the coach of the Pats he has gone from having a great defense to now having to rely on the offense to continue the winning ways. With nearly the whole offense of last year back plus a healthy Wes Welker back from his knee injury its easy to see why expectations are so high. The passing game is going to once again be high flying but questions still are hovering around the inconsistent running game of 2009. Running back by committee has worked for the last 4 years and it will get them by against most this year. But lets not remember the Jets defense is really good and if they want to win the division they must create more balance.
This team will only go as far as their defensive improvement from 2009. It was time that the defensive side of the ball got younger, last year they started the move and this year they really committed to the youth movement. Lucky for this squad is that all three of the other teams in the AFC East are defensively minded teams. Still this team will have to become more consistent if they are going to avoid another first round loss like 2009. The linebacker crew is young but very fast and they are a very confident bunch. The weakness of this squad is the defensive line and the secondary. Coach Belichik is a defensive genius but even he will struggle to have this team in the top half of the leagues defenses.
A part from the place kicking the special teams has not been very special for the Patriots. Not sure that its going to change much as they really don't have a quality kick or punt returner plus the punting will go into camp with more questions than answers.
Odds for the New England Patriots 2010
- Over under wins 9.5
- Odds to win AFC EAST +120
- Odds to win Super Bowl +1000
- Odds to win AFC Championship +450
Hard to see any value on any of the Patriots to win anything this year as they relied to much on the offense in 2009 and 2010 might require even more from that offense. The defense is just too young and does not have near the talent as in years past. Plus the special teams unit is subpar as a whole. If you have to place a future wager would play the under 9.5 wins.
