Horse Racing really needs a big story and a Triple Crown Winner would do the trick. Good news for Super Saver is that this years crop of three year olds might be the weakest in the last 10 years. Still it would take a monster effort for Super Saver to win the Triple Crown and as we have seen in years past staying healthy might be the biggest key.
The three most logical contenders (Super Saver, Looking at Lucky, and Paddy O Prado) all will most likely go off less than 5-1. So lets leave the win wager alone for this Preakness and see if we can hit a decent Trifecta play. As much as I would like to throw out the favorites and really go for a bomb its just not in the cards this year. So lets throw a 4 horse Trifecta Box with the below horses. This should pay at least $750 for a $1 trifecta box.
Super Saver: Really think he is the 2nd best horse but with hot riding Calvin Borrel and improvement over last three races its hard to see him out of the money. Might be our best case scenario for him to run out of the money but barring an injury he will be right near the front and have his oppurtunity to win coming down the stretch.
Looking at Lucky: Some horses just get themselves into bad spots, or have bad racing luck. Well Looking at Lucky has not been Lucky ever since his Breeders Cup Juvenille Win. Baffert switches jockey's to see if Martin Garcia can switch up this horses luck. Really think he will be way overbet after many see his traffic issues in the derby. My big question does he have the turn of foot to win as his beyer numbers aren't that great.
Aikenite: Will be the value in our Trifecta Box and will ensure we get a nice payoff if he hits the board. Big questions surround this horse most surrounding if this horse is good enough to hang with this crowd. My take is this is a stalking horse that has been improving and is coming into his third start this year which in his 2 year old campaign was his best performance. Almost all the horses that hit the board are on or near the lead just where this longshot will be. Pletcher doesn't usually just throw horses in way over their heads and when asked he has shown confidence that this horse is sitting on a big one.
First Dude: If you like front end runners then you will love this horse. In what looks like a field void of top end early speed this horse should find himself on the lead. Most think he will give way once the real running starts but if he can get away with fairly slow fractions he could hold on and hit the board.
This trifeta is not expensive but could turn into some really nice value if one or both of our longshots outrun their odds. When it comes to handicapping a horse race value is all that matters and this years Preakness value is in betting the exotics.
