Washington Redskins '09 Preview and Predictions

By: CTS Guest Capper     Date: Jul 26, 2009
Print Article

Sports Handicapper Craig Trapp is back today to breakdown his NFL team of day Washington Redskins. Oddsmakers have made the over under on wins for the Redskins at 8. Many questions swirl around the Redskins as much is expected from there fans and owner. Second year Coach Zorn has his work cut out for him in what is always a hotly contested NFC EAST.

Offensively this Redskins team looks like a team that could consistently put up a ton of points. Last year offensive master mind Zorn was perplexed as his team was so inconsistent on offense. In the offseason the Skins flirted with upgrading at QB but none worked out and they again will turn to Campbell. Jason Campbell is one of those QB's that if you put him through a combine looks like a can't miss prospect, but so far that has not turned into on the field success. Clinton Portis is an above average running back but a lack of passing game has made his yards tough to come by at times. Best receiving option is very talented TE Chris Cooly who consistently picks up key first downs and touch downs. The WR option is a weakness in my opinion with a lack of a big tall receiver that could help a accuracy challenged QB. Offensively they will be slightly better than last year but will not be good enough to see quantum leap in wins.

Defensively this team has made the biggest free agency splash of the season by signing Albert Haynesworth. Not sure that he will live up to the 100 million he will be paid in DC but he will stop the run which will be a huge upgrade for the Skins. In a division that lives and dies by running the ball this is a much needed improvement. This defense overall will be much better if they can stay healthy. The secondary has the opportunity to be very good this year and if they front seven can consistently put pressure on passing down this team could even be an elite defense.

Historically one of the best divisions in football make the Redskins task of winning more than 8 games very tough. A owner that loves to medal in his team could spell trouble for Zorn if the Skins get off to a slow start. The pressure that is on Zorn and QB Campbell will not be positive and this team will finish below 500. In fact this season could get ugly as a 6 win campaign could result in both Zorn and Campbell being let go in this next offseason.
