VTs brand of defense is such that it helps them win games ugly, but bear in mind Biose States defense is solid with 10 returning starters and a unit that allowed just 17 ppg in 2009 and were third in the nation in forced turnovers, THE DEFENSE of BSU will be the difference, they will have more opportunties to score in this game which gives them the edge with the better offense. VT is 0-21 away from home SU against Top 5 teams.

The fact Vandys passing game is weak at best, and throw in the fact their top 2 running backs are out and Northwestern looks like the play over the fall number here. The hung tough in last years bowl game losing to Auburn in a shootout by 3 points, but this SEC foe for the opener on the road is better suited to beat. The Dores also have lost 8 straight at home to Division I teams! With the entire OL back for NW, and their all world dual threat QB Persa back with weapons, I do not see Vandy trading punches in this one, even at home. NW is 8-1 ATS their last 8 road games and figure to move the chains in this one enough to squeak out a 7-10 point win. Vandy not the type of team who can play from behind and RB Norman for Vandy iffy at best for this game after tearing a MCL and getting scoped 3 weeks ago.

Cincinnati +2.5

Not the Pat Hill team of old at Fresno State. Not even close. The once vaunted defenses are no more. Cincy without coach Kelly, but return a ton of explosive players on offense, and work out of fall camp is that QB Zach Collaros who started numerous games last year after QB Pike went down, is as sharp as ever, He is a serious dual threat QB and is backed up by a decent WR unit and solid RB in Pead as well. With a defense that ranked 98th overall last year and worse than that against the run, against the open spread attack, I doubt Fresno can trade punches all night long in this one against a team under the radar screen here. While Cincys defense is not stellar, their offense still is and they have the best talent on this field as an underdog against a Fresno team that is middle of the pack in the WAC. I will grab the points and expect a 3-6 point Cincy outright win.

Kansas St. -2

With UCLAs starting QB out or playing at 60% at best with a back injury, and the Bruins figured to finish eighth in the PAC 10, I like the set up here. K State is still in revenge mode after a beating a they took on the road last year to the Bruins. Also UCLA camp reports are not good, injuries to an already depleted OL, and a whole new offense that has not looked good in scrimmage, from my sportswriter source in LA. K State will pound the rock with RB Thomas who was held to 54 yards last year in LA, but managed to run all over everyone else last season for over 1200 yards. An ex-QB, he also is on the radar of NFL teams at over 6 foot and 230 pounds with blazing speed. K State at home avenges a 23-9 loss last year.

Not sold on young QBs for BYU in this opener. Washingtons QB Locker the real deal and they will trade puches on offense, might need a lucky bounce or two, but without QB Hall for BYU this year, they need to prove they can hang with a legit BCS school and a dual threat talented QB who is playing on Sundays soon! Cannot ignore Pitts defense and running back Lewis, who is going to wreak havoc all over the place in the Big East this year, but Utah is a HUGE test on the road in their home stadium, and they have a stud running back of their own, and a very stout defensive line who will frustrate RB Lewis who is opening the season behind a shaky offensive line with only 2 starters back, and Pitt is breaking in a new QB after Stull has graduated. Utah has a regular season win streak at home of 17 games and are very tough to beat in . QB Wynn for Utah is a stud and has 2 returning WRs that can stretch the field vertically and make big plays, and Utah has a very balanced attack with loads of talent. Pitt is a physical, close to the vest type of team that wants to pound the rock, and Utah is stout up front and will bend but not break in this one. Pitt higher ranked, but outmanned here unless Utah just starts to turn it over like crazy, and last year the Utes QB only had 5 picks all season.

Minnesota -2.5

The bottom line in this game, a Big 10 team playing a Sun Belt team should always be a favorite, and Minny is 6-2 ATS their last 8 versus the Sun Belt conference. The KEY in this game is that Middle Tennessee who is a GOOD football team, has lost the services of all world QB Dwight Dasher to suspension. We was the 7th ranked offensive player in total yard production in 2009 and will be sorely missed. I liken it to the San Fran 49ers losing Joe Montana right before the Super Bowl. Minnesota has some issues on defense, but their offense is led by Adam Weber making his 39th start at QB and the guy can flat out get it done. Minnesota also has been known to be a bankable team over the years in their openers going 7-1 the last 8 years SU. Without Dasher at QB for MTSU in this one, and a JUCO transfer starting his first division I game against a BCS school, I like Minnys chances here to outscore MTSU on the road and win by 8 to 10 points.

Bonus Play Half Unit. Like Iowa States offense, which has a stub QB in Arnuad and a killer RB in Alex Robinson. No Illinois defense is weak at best and I remember South Florida destroying this middle of the MAC team in the Bowl game last year by stuffing it right at them. ISU a bottom feeder in the Big 12, however they should at home get the job done here in a very winnable game with a powerful offense, even if they give up 20 to 24, they should score close to 30 here in Ames.
