Sunday MLB Free Play from Doc’s Sports Take #906 Milwaukee Brewers over Chicago Cubs (Sunday, 2:10pm EST) Jeff Samardzija is getting a lot of attention this season, despite pitching for a last place team. That’s because he currently has a league-leading 1.68 ERA, but only has one win to show for it. The Cubs has been terrible at supporting him offensively and the bullpen has blown several games late as well. Samardzija is considered one of the biggest trade targets this summer and several teams have shown interest. But the ironic thing is that Samardzija really isn’t pitching anywhere close to where his ERA indicates. His peripheral numbers aren’t very much better than last season when he posted a 4.34 ERA. The difference this season is a higher strand rate, lower BABIP and lower home run rate. There is quite a bit of luck and variance in those statistics, so Samardzija is about the same pitcher as he has been for the last couple of years and probably overvalued right now. One guy that is putting together a pretty good season but isn’t getting much attention is Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse. The veteran right-hander is putting together the best season of his long 14-year career at 6-1 with a 2.92 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. His strikeout rate is the highest of his career and his walk rate is the lowest ever for him. He should be able to handle a Cubs lineup that has really struggled to put runs on the board at 12th in the NL in runs scored. Against righties, the Cubs have performed even worse. There’s a decent chance that this game will be decided by the respective bullpens, and if that’s the case the Brewers have a decided advantage. The line on this game it just too low, so we’re on Milwaukee. Sunday features a Game 7 NHL Stanley Cup Playoff selection!
